What is an LCD controller
The role and function of LCD controller
LCD controller (liquid crystal display controller) is a dedicated integrated circuit (IC) connected to the host CPU and controlling the LCD panel.
It is also known as LCDC (LCD controller), display controller, or liquid crystal controller. In the following text, we will refer to it as LCDC.
LCDC receives display image data from the host CPU and outputs data and synchronization signals at timing that matches the specifications
of the LCD panel. Some LCDCs have built-in memory and image processing capabilities, allowing them to expand, shrink, rotate, or overlay multiple images to fit the screen size.
Example of Epson LCDC Evaluation Board
Arduino is a widely sold board equipped with MCU. Here, we introduce an example of using Arduino Due, which is one of the Arduino boards connected to Epson LCDC S1D13781.
Arduino Due is an Atmel SAM3X8E board based on the ARM Cortex-M3 core. Although it is sold globally, it can also be easily obtained through many online retailers.
S1D13781 is an LCDC capable of full-color display control up to WQVGA. The S5U13781R01C100 board is equipped with S1D13781, designed for easy connection to Arduino Due.
We have prepared a reference design that combines the S5U13781R01C100 board, Arduino Due, and WQVGA TFT LCD module, allowing you to easily verify the functionality of the LCDC.
